北アメリカが原産です。わが国へは明治時代の中頃に渡来し、帰化しています。畑や道端、荒れ地などに生え、長さは１０〜２５センチになります。茎は根もとから分枝して地面を這って広がります。葉は長楕円形で、表面に暗い赤紫色の斑紋が目立ちます。葉の斑紋がない個体もあります。７月から１０月ごろ、小さな花を咲かせます。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

トウダイグサ科トウダイグサ属の一年草で、学名は Euphorbia supina。英名は Spotted spurge。

The Spotted spurge (Euphorbia supina) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is an anuual herb that is native to North America. It was introduced into Japan in the middle days of Meiji Era (1868-1912) and nowadays, naturalized in so many places. It grows in fields, roadsides and barrens, and can reach 10-25 cm long. The stems are branched at the base and spread by creeping on the grounds. The leaves are oblong with prominent dark magenta mottles on the upper surfaces. Some individuals do not have leaf spots. The small flowers bloom from July to October. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
