世界の暖帯から温帯にかけて広く分布しています。わが国でも、すでに明治時代には、近畿地方でかなり広く帰化していました。荒れ地や河原に生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。葉は３全裂または羽状に全裂します。９月から１１月ごろ、上部の枝先に目立たない黄色い花を咲かせます。舌状花はありません。花後の痩果（そうか）の先端には２〜４個の逆棘のある芒があり、これが動物の毛などにからまって種子が散布されます。

キク科センダングサ属の一年草で、学名は Bidens pilosa。英名は Hairy begger-ticks、Spanish needles。

The hairy begger-ticks (Bidens pilosa) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annial herb that is distributed worldwidely to the warm to tropical areas. This herb was naturalized in Kinki-district of Japan in the days of Meiji Era. It grows in wastelands and stream banks and can reach 50-100 cm in height. Leaves are divided into deep trilobate or pinnate. The inconspicuous yellow flower heads are seen on the tip of upper branches from September to November. The ray flower is absent. Fruits are achenes tipped with 2-4 barbed spines. The barbed fruits adhere to clothing and the fur of animals, thus the seeds are disposed.
