'Kuro-ki' (Symplocos lucida) belongs to Symplocaceae family. It is an evergreen semi-tall tree that is distributed in Chugoku district of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree occurs in the coastal laurel forests and can reach about 10 m in height. The barks are smooth, blackish brown and have small lenticels. The leaves are elliptic to oblong, leathery, alternate and almost entire. The spikes are borne in the axiles of new branches and bloom fragrant small white flowers in March to April. The stamens are long and protrude from corallas. The fruits are elliptic drupes and ripen purplish black in late fall.
