わが国の本州、中国地方と四国・九州に分布しています。海岸近くの照葉樹林に生え、高さは１０メートルほどになります。樹皮は黒褐色で平滑、小さな皮目があります。葉は楕円形から長楕円形の革質で互生し、縁はほとんど全縁です。３月から４月ごろ、前年枝の葉腋に穂状花序をだし、芳香のある白色の小さな花を咲かせます。雄しべは長く、花冠より突き出します。果実は楕円形の核果で、晩秋に紫黒色に熟します。名前は、樹皮が黒っぽいことから。

ハイノキ科ハイノキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Symplocos lucida。英名はありません。

"Kuro-ki" (Symplocos lucida) belongs to the family Symplocaceae. It is semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed in Chugoku district of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Honshu. This tree grows in the coastal laurel forests and can reach about 10 m in height. The barks are smooth, blackish brown and have small lenticels. The leaves are elliptic to oblong, leathery, alternate and almost entire. The spikes are borne in the axiles of new branches and bloom fragrant small white flowers in March to April. The stamens are long and protrude from corallas. The fruits are elliptic drupes and ripen purplish black in late fall.
