中央アメリカの熱帯地域が原産です。高さは１０〜１２メートルほどになり、葉は長さ２０〜３０センチの羽状複葉です。小葉は卵形から楕円形で、５〜２０対が互生します。春、明るいピンク色から藤色をした蝶形花を咲かせます。果実は莢果で、長さは１０〜１８センチほどです。南アメリカでは、蔓性の「バニラ」や「こしょう（胡椒）」を這わせる生木支柱栽培法に利用されます。

マメ科グリリキディア属の常緑高木で、学名は Gliricidia sepium。英名は Quickstick、Mexican lilac。

The quickstick (Gliricidia sepium) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the tropics of Central America. This tree grows up to a height of about 10-12 m, and the leaves are pinnate compound leaves with a length of 20-30 cm. The leaflets are ovate to elliptic, with 5-20 pairs alternating. The bright pink to mauve papillionaceous flowers come in bloom in spring. The fruits are pods and are about 10-18 cm long. In South America, it is used for cultivating raw wood stanchions that crawl vines such as "vanilla" and "pepper".
