南アフリカのケープ地方北部が原産です。楕円形の葉が２個だけ開き、高さは１０センチほどです。葉は多肉質で､細かくへこんだ葉脈とたくさんの小隆起があります。冬に花を咲かせますが、放射状に広がった雄しべが目立ちます。夏には地上部が枯死して休眠します。わが国では「マッソニア・ロンギペス（Massonia longipes）」と誤って呼ばれています。

ユリ科マッソニア属の多年草で、学名は Massonia pustulata。英名はありません。

The Massonia pustulata belongs to Lilaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the northern Cape region of South Africa. It has only two elliptic leaves that open to a height of about 10 cm. The leaves are fleshy, with finely indented veins and many small ridges. It flowers in winter, with conspicuous radial stamens. In summer, the above-ground parts die and the plant goes dormant. In Japan, it is incorrectly called "Massonia longipes".
