フィリピン諸島が原産です。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは３メートルほどになります。葉は広卵形で対生し、葉柄はありません。夏に、枝先から花序を下垂させ、コーラルピンクの花を咲かせます。花序の上に、紫がかったピンク色の苞があるのが特徴です。和名では「おおばのやどりのぼたん（大葉の宿り野牡丹）」と呼ばれます。

ノボタン科メディニラ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Medinilla magnifica。英名は Showy medinilla、Chandelier tree。

Medinilla magnifica belongs to Melastomataceae (the Melastome family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to the Philippine Islands. This shrub grows in rainforests and can reach about 3 m in height. The leaves are broad ovate, opposite and sessile. The pendant inflorescences are borne at the terminal branches and bloom coral-pink flowers in summer. They have the characteristics of the purplish pink bracts above the inflorescences.
