アメリカの東南部から中南部、ノースカロライナ州からテキサス州東部に分布しています。湿った林内や渓谷、低地の河岸段丘などに生え、高さは2〜3メートルになります。幹は地中にあり、地上に伸びることはほとんどありません。葉は直径0.3〜1.5メートルの掌状複葉で、滑らかで長い葉柄がつきます。夏に長い花茎を伸ばし、円錐花序に白色の花を咲かせます。果実は直径1センチほどの液果で、黒色に熟します。別名で「くまでやし(熊手椰子)」とも呼ばれます。 
ヤシ科サバル属の常緑低木で、学名は Sabal minor(syn. Sabal adansonii)。英名は Dwarf palmetto、Bush palmetto。 
The dwarf palmetto (Sabal minor) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from North Carolina to east Texas in the United States. This palm grows in moist forests, ravines and river terrace areas, and can reach 2-3 m in height. Trunk remains below ground, almost never comes up. Leaves are palmate compound 0.3-1.5 m in length and width with the smooth long petioles. In summer, panicles of small whitish flowers are seen on the long flowering stalk. Fruits are round berries about 1 cm in diameter, and ripen black.
