わが国の各地をはじめ、アジアに広く分布しています。池沼の浅い水中に生え、高さは７０〜１００センチになります。水底の地下茎から、３稜形の葉を直立してだします。６月から８月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして分枝し、上部に雄花序と下部に雌花序をつけます。名前は、果実を「くり（栗）」に見立てたもの。

ミクリ科ミクリ属の多年草で、学名は Sparganium erectum。英名は Bur reed。

The bur reed (Sparganium erectum) belongs to the family Sparganiaceae. It is a perennial herb that is distributed all over Japan and in widely Asia. This herb grows in shallow waters of ponds or bogs and can reach 70-100 cm in height. It bears erect tri-angular leaves from bottom rhizomes. The branched flowering stalks are borne from June to August, and arranged male clusters on the upper part, female clusters on the lower part. The fruits look like a chestnut bur.
