南アフリカのケープ地方が原産で、およそ６０種が分布しています。高温多湿と風雨に弱く、冷涼な気候を好みます。矮性でよく分枝して枝先に多くの花を咲かせます。品種改良が進んでいて、花色も緋赤色やピンク色、紫色や黄色などと多彩です。 写真中２の品種は、「メラニー（cv. Melanie）」。作出者クリス・テルライト（Chris Tellwright）氏の娘さんの名前に因みます。写真中７・下は、「ポエトリーミックス（cv. Poetry Mix）」。 |

The Nemesia (Nemesia strumosa) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family) and consists of about 60 species. It is an annual herb that is native to the Cape province in South Africa. This herb is weak in weather, hot and humid conditions, and it prefers cool environment. It is dwarf, much-branched and produces many flowers at the top branches. It is advanced to breed improvement, there are many cultivars with varied flower colors, such as scarlet, pink, purple or yellow. The 3rd photo is a garden variety 'Melanie'. It is named after the daughter of Chris Tellwright, the author of the variety. |
