Lolium multiflorum

The Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual or a biennial herb that is native to Europe and West Asia. It was introduced into Japan as a meadow grass in Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). This herb is used for an erosion control planting and an afforestation planting, and nowadays it is naturalized in so many places. The leaves are linear though they are convolute at first. The slender spikes are borne and produce many flat spikelets from June to August.
