わが国の各地に分布している「みやこぐさ(都草)」の一品種です。日当たりのよい道端や草地などに生え、茎は地面を這って広がります。4月から10月にかけて、葉腋から花柄を出して、黄色い蝶形花を数個咲かせます。花色は黄色から朱赤色に変化します。 
マメ科ミヤコグサ属の多年草で、学名は Lotus corniculatus var. japonicus f. versicolor。英名は Bird's foot trefoil。 
The bird's foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. japonicus f. versicolor) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is a form of "Miyako-gusa" that is distributed all over Japan. This herb grows on sunny roadsides and grasslands, and its stems crawl on the ground. The peduncles come out from the axils and several yellow papillionaceous flowers come in bloom from April to October. The flower color changes from yellow to vermilion.
