東アジアが原産で、わが国へは９世紀ごろ薬用として渡来しました。８月から９月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして散形花序をだし、小さな白い星形の花を咲かせます。花には甘い香りがあります。中国料理や朝鮮料理の素材と利用されますが、軟白栽培した葉は「黄にら」、花茎は「花にら」と呼ばれています。カロチンの含有率が非常に高く、他の栄養素も豊富に含みます。

ユリ科ネギ属の多年草で、学名は Allium tuberosum。英名は Chinese chives、Garlic chives。

The Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to East Asia. This herb was introduced into Japan in the nineth century as a medicated plant. The flowers are small white star-shaped, bloom in the umbels from August to September. They have sweet odors. It is used as an ingredient in Chinese and Korean cuisine. The blanch leaves are called "Ki-nira" and the flower stalks are called "Hana-nira". It has a very high carotene content and is rich in other nutrients.
