ヨーロッパや西アジアが原産の「せいようなし」の一品種です。19世紀の中頃、フランスのクロード・ブランシュ(Claude Blanchet)氏が発見した交雑種ですが、母種は不明です。わが国へは明治36年に導入されました。葉は長楕円状卵形で、4月に白色の花を咲かせます。果実には、豊かな香りとバランスのとれた味わい、滑らかな舌触りがあります。わが国では、山形県で全国の80%が生産されています。 
バラ科ナシ属の常緑高木で、学名は Pyrus communis var. sativa。英名は Common pear。 
The Common pear 'La France' belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is a kind of "common pear" native to Europe and West Asia. It is a hybrid discovered by Claude Blanchet of France in the middle of the 19th century, but the mother species is unknown. It was introduced to Japan in 1903. The leaves are oblong-ovate and bloom white flowers in April. The fruits have a rich aroma, a balanced taste and a smooth texture. In Japan, Yamagata Prefecture accounts for 80% of the national production.
