わが国の本州、山梨県から神奈川県・静岡県に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは２０センチほどになります。葉は広卵状楕円形、基部が耳状にはりだします。よく白雲紋がでます。３月から５月ごろ、紫褐色の小さな花を咲かせます。萼筒は太鼓形で、萼裂片は三角状卵形です。「ギフチョウ」の幼虫の食草として有名です。

ウマノスズクサ科カンアオイ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heterotropa blumei (syn. Asarum blumei)。英名はありません。

"Ranyo-aoi" (Heterotropa blumei) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed to Yamanashi, Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefecture of Honshu in Japan. This herb grows in mountain forests and can reach about 20 cm in height. The leaves are broad ovate-elliptic and eared at the bases. They have often cloudlike mottles on the surfaces. The purple-brown small flowers bloom March to May. The calyx tube is drum-shaped and the calyx lobes are deltoid-ovate. It is famous as a foodplant for Gifu butterfly caterpillars.
