The Brazilian nightshade (Solanum seaforthianum) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is an evergreen woody-vine that is native to the West Indies. Today, it is widely planted in tropical regions and is also naturalized. It grows on the edge of tropical rainforests and in wastelands, and is vine and 3-4 m long. The leaves are ovate, usually split into pinnately lobes and alternate. The panicles are borne in summer and bloom a lot of bluish-purple flowers. The corolla is split into five and the yellow anthers stand out. The fruits are berries, about 1 cm in diameter, and ripen bright red. It is also wild in Okinawa prefecture in Japan.
