"Ja-yanagi" (Salix eriocarpa) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan and is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in wetlands such as riverbanks and can reach 5 to 10 m in height. The bark is grayish brown with deep vertical cracks. The leaves are narrow elliptic, with sharp serrations on the edges and alternate. It has the maximum width near the base of the leaf blade and the back side is powdery white. Although it is dioecious, only female strains have been found in Japan. Around March, the flowers open at the same time as the leaves unfold. The branches are extremely fragile and are thought to grow from these branches. It is also called "Ooshiro-yanagi" by another name.
