ヨーロッパの中部からウクライナ地方が原産です。わが国へは明治時代の中頃に渡来しました。乾燥した岩の多い草地に生え、高さは10〜25センチになります。葉は掌状に分裂し、茎葉は線形で無柄です。3月から5月ごろ、藍色から赤紫色の花を咲かせます。葯は黄色です。 
キンポウゲ科オキナグサ属の多年草で、学名は Pulsatilla vulgaris。英名は Pasque flower。 
The Pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native from central Europe to Ukraine. It was introduced into Japan in the middle of Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). This herb grows in arid rocky grasslands and can reach 10-25 cm in height. The leaves are divided palmately, and the cauline leaves are linear and sessile. The indigo blue to magenta flowers bloom from March to May. The anthers are yellow.
