しゃしゃんぼ (小小ん坊)

わが国の本州、関東地方南部以西から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島南部や中国に分布しています。暖地の山地に生え、高さは２〜４メートルになります。卵形または楕円状卵形の葉は厚い革質で、上部に浅い鋸歯があります。６月から７月ごろ、葉腋から総状花序をだし、小さな壺形の白い花を咲かせます。液果は球形で、晩秋に黒紫色に熟し、甘酸っぱくて食べられます。名前は、果実が丸くて小さい意味の「ささんぼ（小小ん坊）」が転訛したものです。 |

ツツジ科スノキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Vaccinium bracteatum。英名はありません。 |

"Sha-shanbo" (Vaccinium bracteatum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Heath family). It is a small evergreenl tree that is distributed from Kanto district of Honshu west to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as the south Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows in warm mountains, and can reach 2-4 m in height. Leaves are ovate to oblong-ovate, thick leathery, and slightly serrated at upper part of edges. From June to July, the small whitish bell-shaped flowers are seen in the racemes of leaf axils. Fruits are small round berries and ripen purplish-black in late fall, they have sweet and sour flavor and are edible. |
