わが国の本州に分布しています。低い山地や丘陵に生え、高さは4メートルほどになります。下部からよく分枝して、横に広がります。3月から4月ごろ、葉の展開と同時に、先のとがった細い尾状花序をだします。雌花序は淡緑色ですが、果期には10センチほどに伸び、刮ハは熟して2裂します。 
ヤナギ科ヤナギ属の落葉低木で、学名は Salix japonica。英名はありません。 
"Shiba-yanagi" (Salix japonica) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Honshu in Japan. This tree grows in low mountains or hillsides and can reach about 4 m in height. It is much branched at the bases and extends transversally. The slender catkins are borne as soon as foliation from March to April. The female clusters are pale green and increase in length about 10 cm. The capsules are splitting open when mature.
