ヨーロッパ南部から西アジアが原産です。古代エジプトでは、すでに栽培が行われていたといいます。高さは1.5メートルほどになり、葉は細かに裂けた羽状複葉です。8月から10月ごろ、かさのような複散形花序に黄色い花を咲かせます。葉や種子は魚料理のハーブとして利用されます。本種は「ういきょう(Foeniculum vulgare)」の栽培変種です。 
セリ科ウイキョウ属の多年草で、学名は Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce。英名は Sweet fennel。 
The Sweet fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce) belongs to Apiaceae (Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is native from southern Europe to West Asia. This herb was cultivated in Ancient Egypt. This herb can reach about 1.5 m in height. The leaves are pinnate compound with finely-filamented lobes. The yellow flowers come in the compound umbels in August to October. The leaves and seeds are used for fish dishes. This species is a cultivated variety of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare).
