メキシコが原産です。多湿で日陰の環境を好みます。和名では「しまむらさきつゆくさ（縞紫露草）」と呼ばれます。葉は淡い緑色の地にくすんだ紫緑色の縞模様がはいり、裏面は暗紫色です。夏に、淡い紫色の小さな３弁花を咲かせます。傷つけたときに出る汁液は、被れの原因にもなります。

ツユクサ科ゼブリナ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Zebrina pendula。英名は Wandering Jew。

The Wandering Jew (Zebrina pendula) belongs to Commelinaceae (the Spiderwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Mexico. This herb prefers humid and shade places. The leaves have purple-green magenta streaks against pale green backround and the rear surfaces are dark purple. The small, pale purple, three-petaled flowers bloom in summer. The white sap ooze when breaked a stem and leaf cause a skin irritation.
