アメリカのアリゾナ・テキサス州からメキシコの中部にかけて分布しています。球状または円筒状で、高さ３０センチ、直径１５センチ以上になります。緑色の茎は無毛で、５〜１３個の稜があります。赤味を帯びた棘は６〜９個ずつが放射状に生えています。３月から４月ごろ、赤桃色の花を咲かせます。

The Devil's-head cactus (Echinocactus horizonthalonius) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a ball cuctus that is distributed from Texas-Arizona in the United States to the central part of Mexico. It is spherical or cylindrical and can be 30 cm high and 15 cm or more in diameter. The green stem is hairless and has 5 to 13 ridges. Six to nine reddish spines grow radially. The red-pink flowers come in March to April.
