わが国の八重山諸島の西表島と台湾に分布しています。低地から標高１９００メートルまでの森林や低木帯に生え、高さは６０〜１００センチになります。葉は広い披針形で、粗い毛が生えます。花は淡い紅色の漏斗状で、赤紫色の斑点があり、９月から１０月ごろ、茎頂の散房状花序に咲きます。外花披片の基部に２個の球状の膨らみがあることが特徴です。

ユリ科ホトトギス属の多年草で、学名は Tricyrtis formosana。英名は Formosa toad-lily。

The Formosa toad-lily (Tricyrtis formosana) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Iriomote of the Yaeyama Islands in Japan and Taiwan. This herb grows in lowlands, forests and scrubs to 1900 m elavation, and can reach 60-100 cm in height. The leaves are broad lanceolate with rough hairs. The flowers are pale rose pink funnel-shaped with magenta specks, and bloom in the terminal corymbose clusters from September to October. It is defined by having two bulges on the base of outer tepals.
