オーストラリアの東部、クイーンズランド州からニューサウスウェールズ州に分布しています。河岸や低湿地などに生え、高さは７メートルほどになります。樹皮は紙状に剥離します。葉は線形で不規則につきます。春に花序をだし、小さな白い花をいっぱい咲かせます。この樹木には芳香油が含まれ、ティーツリーオイルの商業生産には最も重要な種類となっています。

フトモモ科カユプテ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Melaleuca alternifolia。英名は Tea tree、Narrow-leaved paperbark。

The Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) belongs to Myrtaceae (the Myrtle family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to eastern Australia, from Queensland south to New South Wales. This tree grows in stream banks and swampy flats, and can reach about 7 m in height. The bark is papery. The leaves are linear and irregularly arranged. The many-flowered spikes are born and bloom small white flowers in spring. It has essential oils. It is the most important species for commercial production of Tea tree oil.
