西インド諸島が原産です。熱帯地方の沼沢などに生え、高さは1.5〜2.4メートルになります。葉は茎の基部から叢生し、長い葉柄が暗赤色をしているのが特徴です。葉身は「カンナ」に似ています。夏、長い花茎の先に総状花序をだし、薄紫色の花を咲かせます。 
クズウコン科タリア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Thalia geniculata var. ruminoides。英名は Red stemmed thalia。 
The Red stemmed thalia (Thalia geniculata var. ruminoides) belongs to the family Marantaceae. It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native of the West Indies. It grows in swamps of tropical regions, and up to a height of 1.5-2.4 m. The leaves are crowded from the base of the stem and the long petioles are dark red. The leaf blade is similar to Canna. The raceme is borne at the tip of a long flower stem and the light purple flower will bloom in summer.
