"Chishima-kumomagusa" (Saxifraga merkii var. merkii) belongs to the Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Daisetsu Mountain Chain, Yubari Mountains, and Shiretoko Mountains of Hokkaido, and also North East Asia. This herb grows on alpine screes and can reach 3-6 cm in height. The leaves are obovate to oblong, fleshy and covered with glandular hairs. The cymes are borne at the terminal flowering stalks, and 1-5 white flowers bloom from July to August. The flower has five petals and ten stamens.
