わが国の固有種で、本州の太平洋側から四国、九州に分布しています。山地の谷筋などに生え、高さは６メートルほどになります。水平に枝を伸ばすのが特徴です。葉は楕円形から広楕円形で対生し、葉縁まで伸びる側脈が目立ちます。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に散形花序を出し、小さな両性花とそのまわりに白い装飾花を咲かせます。名前は花序のかたちが毬に似ているところから。果実は核果で、８月から１０月ごろ熟して、赤色から黒色に変わります。 |

スイカズラ科ガマズミ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum。英名は Japanese snowball。 |

The Japanese snowball (Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan, and distributed to the Pacific Ocean Side of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in along montane streams and can reach about 6 m in height. The branches spread out on the level. The leaves are ellitic to broad elliptic, opposite with visible oblique latera veins. The corymbs are borne on the terminal branches from May to June. The small bisexual flowers are arranged at center and the white ornamental flowers are arraged at around periphery. The fruits are drupes, ripen in red to black from August to October. |
