やぐるまぎく (矢車菊)

ヨーロッパの東南部から西アジアが原産です。道端や畑などに生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。茎や葉の裏面は、白色の綿毛に被われます。葉は長披針形です。わが国には明治の初めに渡来しました。名前は鯉のぼりの柱につける矢車に似ていることから。別名で「やぐるまそう（矢車草）」とも呼ばれます。春から夏にかけて、青色の頭花を咲かせます。鮮紅色やピンク色、藍色、白色など多彩な園芸品種があります。 |

キク科ヤグルマギク属の二年草で、学名は Centaurea cyanus。英名は Cornflower。 |

The Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) belongs to Asteraceae (Aster family). It is a biennial herb that is native to southeastern Europe and West Asia. This herb grows in roadsides or dry fields and can reach 30-90 cm in height. The stems and abaxial sides of leaves are covered with woolly white hairs. The leaves are long-lanceolate. It was introduced into Japan in the early Meiji Era (about 140 years ago). The blue flower heads appear from spring to summer. There are many flower-colored cultivars; rose-pink, pink, dark indigo blue or white. |
