わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球に広く分布しています。山野の草地や林縁に生え、高さは３０〜８０センチになります。根生葉は長楕円状披針形でロゼットを形成し、茎葉は茎を抱きます。縁には波状の鋸歯があり、両面に毛が生えます。５月から７月ごろ、茎頂に総状花序をだし、白色の十字状花を咲かせます。果実は長角果で、花序に沿って直立します。

アブラナ科ヤマハタザオ属の二年草で、学名は Arabis hirsuta。英名は Hairy rock-cress 。

The Hairy rock-cress (Arabis hirsuta) belongs to Brassiaceae (the Mustard family). It is a biennial herb that is distributed widely all over Japan and the Northern Hemisphere. This herb grows in grasslands and woodland edges, and can reach 30-80 cm in height. The basal leaves are oblong-lanceolate, form rosette and the cauline leaves enfold stems. They have wavy edges and hairs on the both sides. The white cruciate flowers come in the apical racemes from May to July. The fruits are siliques and arrange upright along the inflorescences.
