The Sydney funnel web spider (Atrax robustus) belongs to Atracidae (the mygalomorph spider family). It is a spider that is distributed within a 160-km radius around Sydney, Australia. They are black, about 2 cm long, and usually live in the open air, where they build funnel-shaped spider webs. However, during the mating season from December to January, the males also invade indoor habitats. Their bites cause intense pain due to their highly acidic venom, and if left untreated, can result in death. The main ingredient of the venom is robustoxin, and until about 1950, when there was no serum, there were cases of death.
