オーストラリアの北部からパプアニューギニア、南東アジアの諸島に分布しています。明るい森や草地に生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。分枝してよく広がり、葉は掌状に３〜５裂します。夏から秋にかけて、「ハイビスカス」に似た赤い花を咲かせます。花冠の中心は白色または黄白色をしています。種子にはジャコウの香りがあります。乾季には地上部は枯死し、地下の塊茎で生き続けるそうです。

アオイ科トロロアオイ属の多年草で、学名は Abelmoschus moschatus ssp. tuberosus。英名は Native rosella。

The Native rosella (Abelmoschus moschatus ssp. tuberosus) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from northern Australia to Papua New Guinea and the islands of southeast Asia. It grows in light forests and grasslands and is 1-2 m tall. It is well branched and spreading, and its leaves are palmately lobed with 3 to 5 lobes. From summer to fall, it produces red flowers similar to those of the "hibiscus". The center of the corolla is white or yellowish-white. The seeds have a musk scent. In the dry season, the above-ground parts die and they continue to live on underground tubers.
