The "Abura-chan" (Lindera preecox) belongs to Lauraceae (the Laurel family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan. This tree grows in wet places along mountain streams and can reach 2-5 m in height. The barks are grayish brown with small lenticels. The leaves are ovate to ovate-elliptic and alternate. The umbels are borne on the peduncles, and the pale yellowish green flowers bloom in March to April. This species is similar to "Dankoubai" (Lindera obtusiloba), it is defined by the grayish brown young branch, long peduncle and paler flower color.
