The Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) belongs to Mimosaceae (the Mimosa family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed in southeastern Australia, from New South Wales to Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. It is 12 to 15 m high and will live for over 100 years. The bark is dark brown with deep cracks. The leaves are lanceolate, leathery and dark grayish green. There are 3-5 parallel veins. Around March, peduncles are extended from the axils to form spherical inflorescences, and pale cream-colored flowers bloom. The lumber is of good quality and is used for decoration and furniture, and tannins are collected from the bark.
