ヨーロッパ南部、ポルトガルからバルカン半島それにアフリカ北西部が原産です。潅木帯や丘陵の岩礫地の斜面などに生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。葉は濃緑色で根生し、羽状に深裂します。晩春から初夏にかけて、丈夫な穂状花序をだし、白色から藤色、淡紅色などの筒状花を咲かせます。花は棘のある緑色から紫色を帯びた苞に包まれます。葉は、ローマ建築におけるコリント式円柱の柱頭を飾るモチーフとして使用されてきました。和名では「はあざみ（葉薊）」と呼ばれます。

キツネノマゴ科アダトダ属の多年草で、学名は Acanthus mollis。英名は Bear's breeches。

The Bear's breeches (Acanthus mollis) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Acanthus family). It is a perennial herb that is native to southern Europe, from Portugal east to the Balkans, as well as northwestern Africa. This herb grows on scrubland or stony hillsides and can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are dark green, basal, and pinnately divided into deep lobes. Tubular whitish, lilac, or rose-colored flowers with spiny green or purplish bracts bloom on stout spikes from late spring to early summer. The leaves inspired the design of the Corinthian column capitals in Roman architecture. (edit by Greg Brockelbank)
