熱帯アフリカの西部が原産です。高さは１．２〜１．８メートルになり、潅木状になります。葉は「あざみ（薊）」のように深裂し、裂片の先がとげ状に尖ります。花は淡いピンクで、花苞にも長いとげがあります。和名では「ひめはあざみ（姫葉薊）」と呼ばれます。

キツネノマゴ科アダトダ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Acanthus montanus。英名は Bear's breech、Mountain thistle。

The Bear's breech (Acanthus montanus) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Acanthus family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the western part of tropical Africa. The height is 1.2 to 1.8 m and it looks like a shrub. The leaves are deeply split like thistles, and the tips of the splits are pointed like thorns. The flowers are pale pink and the flower bracts also have long thorns.
