メキシコからブラジル、アルゼンチンにかけて分布しています。ヨーロッパには１８世紀に導入され、さまざまな園芸品種が作出されてきました。まつかさ状の球根をもち、葉腋から花柄をのばして花を咲かせます。花期は夏から秋にかけて、花色が豊富です。別名で「はなぎりそう（花桐草）」とも呼ばれます。

イワタバコ科アキメネス属の多年草で、学名は Achimenes sp.（属の総称）。英名は Orchid pansy、Widow's tears。

The Orchid pansy (Achimenes sp.) belongs to Gesneriaceae (the African violet family). It is a perennial herbacious plant that is distributed from Mexico to Brazil and Argentina. It was introduced in Europe in the 18th century, and various horticultural varieties have been produced. It has pinecone-shaped bulbs, and the peduncles are extended from the axils to make the flowers bloom. The flowering season is from summer to fall and it has rich in flower colors.
