The Giant spaniard (Aciphylla scott-thomsonii) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed southward from Mount Cook on the South Island of New Zealand. It is the largest of the 39 species of the genus Akifira, with a height of 3 m. The turquoise spear-shaped leaves are hard and have sharp, long spines. From December to January, the flower stalks, which are as long as 4 m, are extended and yellow flowers bloom in large inflorescences.
