The Moroccan snowflake (Acis tingitana) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to western Morocco, especially around Tangier. It grows in relatively dry rocky or sandy areas at altitudes of less than 1500 m, reaching a height of 30 to 45 cm. The leaves are narrow and string-like, about 20 cm long. In early spring, it produces scapes with several white flowers at the tips. The flowers have six perianth segments. It was previously classified as Leucojum, but was transferred to the genus Acis in 2004 based on molecular phylogenetic research. The specific epithet is derived from the ancient name of Tangier, Tingis, where it is native.
