ヨーロッパから西シベリア、北イランにかけて分布しています。おもに温帯バイオームの落葉樹林やその林縁に生え。高さは３０〜７０センチになります。基部の葉は大きく、３回羽状複葉または３回羽状複葉で、小葉は卵形から卵状披針形です。小葉は多かれ少なかれ鋸歯状です。４月から７月ごろ、茎頂の直立した総状花序に、白色の花を咲かせます。花には、３〜６個の花弁状の萼片があります。果実は液果で、熟すと黒色となります。この果実には、プロトアネモニンが含まれるため有毒です。

The Baneberry (Actaea spicata) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to western Siberia and northern Iran. It primarily grows in deciduous forests and their edges within temperate biomes. It reaches a height of 30 to 70 cm. The basal leaves are large, either trifoliate or bifoliate, with leaflets that are ovate to ovate-lanceolate. The leaflets are more or less serrated. From April to July, it produces white flowers in erect racemes at the stem tips. The flowers have 3 to 6 petal-like sepals. The fruit is a berry that turns black when ripe. This fruit is toxic because it contains protoanemonin.
