エクメア属は、メキシコからアルゼンチンにかけて２００種以上が分布しています。岩の上や樹上に生えます。葉は単色もしくは斑模様、縞模様があり、葉縁には棘があります。本種は、淡緑色の葉が大きなロゼットを形成します。１メートルにもなる長い花茎を伸ばして、大きな花序をつけ、青い花苞からラベンダー色の花を咲かせます。種名は、植物収集家「アウグスト・フェンドラー（Augustus Fendler）」に因みます。

The Aechmea fendleri belongs to Bromeliaceae (the Pineapple family). More than 200 species of the genus Echmea are distributed from Mexico to Argentina. It grows on rocks and trees. The leaves are monochromatic or mottled or striped, with spines on the leaf margins. This species has large rosettes of light green leaves, and long flower stalks up to a meter long, producing large inflorescences with lavender-colored flowers from blue flower bracts. The specific epithet is named after the plant collector Augustus Fendler.
