The Aechmea fulgens belongs to Bromeliaceae (the Pineapple family). It is an evergreen perennial that is native to Brazil. It grows on trees and rocks by its roots. The leaves are sword-shaped, leathery, and rounded at the tip, and are attached in rosettes of a dozen or more. It produces spikes of red, coral ball-like, and bloom purple flowers. It is called "Sango ananasu" in Japanese.
