メキシコから中央アメリカが原産です。高さは５０〜１００センチになり、７月から１０月ごろ、オレンジ色や赤褐色、黄色、黄白色などの花を咲かせます。アステカ族の人々は、これらを採取したり栽培して、薬用や儀式用、装飾用などに利用したそうです。

キク科タゲテス属の一年草で、学名は Tagetes erecta。英名は African marigold。

The African marigold (Tagetes erecta) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to Mexico and Central America. This herb can reach 50-100 cm in height. It blooms orange, red-brown, yellow or yellowish-white flowers from July to October. The Aztecs gathered the wild plant as well as cultivating it for medicinal, ceremonial and decorative purposes.
