The African ottelia (Ottelia ulvifolia) belongs to Hydrocharitaceae (the Frogbit family). It is an annual herb that is distributed in the tropical regions of Africa and Madagascar. It grows in shallow water in humid tropical biomes and can reach a length of around 50 cm. The leaves are submersible, lanceolate, and have long stipes. The surface of the leaves is dark green with purple spots, and the edges are wavy. From July to October, it extends its scape above the water's surface and produces flowers with a white or yellow base and purple patterns in the center.
