メキシコ南部のオアハカ州とチアパス州に分布しています。乾燥した丘陵地や斜面に生え、高さは３０〜４５センチになります。葉は青緑色で、ロゼット状に密生します。葉の縁には鋸歯があり、赤色から黒色の強い棘があります。春に長い花茎を伸ばし、黄色い花を咲かせます。種小名は、メキシコ南部にあるテワンテペク地峡（Isthmus of Tehuantepec）に由来しています。園芸上は「雷帝（らいてい）」と呼ばれます。

The Dwarf buttefly agave (Agave isthmensis) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is a perennial herb that is found in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas in southern Mexico. It grows in dry hilly areas and on slopes, reaching a height of 30 to 45 cm. The leaves are bluish-green and grow densely in a rosette pattern. The leaf margins are serrated, and the leaves bear sharp spines ranging in color from red to black. In spring, it produces long flower stalks and blooms with yellow flowers. The specific epithet is derived from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico.
