メキシコの南部、プエブラ州からオアハカ州に分布しています。乾燥した地域に生え、多肉質で、直径６０センチほどのロゼットを群生します。葉は粉白色を帯びた青緑色で堅く、縁には黒い棘があります。５年以上が経ったころ、長い花茎を伸ばして緑色がかった花を咲かせます。園芸上は「はっこうでん（八荒殿）」と呼ばれます。

リュウゼツラン科リュウゼツラン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Agave macroacantha。英名はありません。

Agave macroacantha belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is a succurent evergreen perennial that is native to Puebla and Oaxaca, south Mexico. This agave grows in arid areas and forms clumping rosettes to 60 cm in diameter. Leaves are stiff, powdery bluish-green with black spines. When the plant is 15 years old or more, greenish flowers are born on the long stalk.
