The Agapetes obovata belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrublet that is distributed from Assam in India to southeastern Yunnan Province in China. It grows in evergreen forests at altitudes of about 2100 m and is epiphytic on trees. The caudex is about 5 cm in diameter, and the branches that emerge from it are well branched, reaching a height of about 60 cm. The leaves are obovate-spatulate, leathery, shiny, and have entire margins. The fruit is a white, spherical berry. It is similar to Agapetes serpens, but tends to be bush-like without long branches and has pale flowers. In Chinese, it is called "倒卵葉樹蘿蔔" (dao luan ye shu luo bo).
