メキシコ南部、プエブラ州からオアハカ州に分布しています。標高が１３５０〜２２５０メートルの山地に生えてロゼットを形成し、高さは６０センチほどになります。青緑色の葉は薄く白粉を帯び、先端には黒褐色の鋭い棘があります。種名はラテン語の「酒飲み」から。多肉の葉はアルコール飲料の原料にされます。園芸上は「らいじん（雷神）」と呼ばれます。

リュウゼツラン科リュウゼツラン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Agave potatorum。英名はありません。

Agave potatorum belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is an evergreen perennial agave that is distributed Puebla and Oaxaca State, south Mexico. This agave grows in the mountains 1350-2250 m above sea level, and forms rosette about 60 cm tall. Leaves are thin and powdery white with brownish-black spines. The specific epithet "potatorum" in the generative of the Latin word "potator" meaning of the drinkers in reference to the use of this plant in making alcoholic beverages.
