アメリカの中南部、テキサス州からアリゾナ州、ニューメキシコ州それにメキシコ北部に分布しています。丘陵の斜面や平原に生え、高さは１〜３．５メートルになります。幹は直立し、葉は３出複葉で、狭披針形から狭楕円形の小葉の縁には棘状の鋸歯があります。２月から４月ごろ、芳香のある黄色い花を咲かせます。果実は液果で、夏に赤く熟し、甘酸っぱくて食用にされます。

メギ科メギ属の常緑低木で、学名は Berberis trifoliolata。英名は Agarita、Agarito、Currant-of-Texas。

The agarita (Berberis trifoliolata) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Berberry family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the central-south United States; from Texas to Arizona, New Mexico and northern Mexico. This tree grows in dry rocky slopes or flats and can reach 1-3.5 m in height. The stem is erect. The leaves are 3-lobed compound, and the leaflets are narrow-lanceolate to narrow-elliptic with spiny toothed edges. The fragrant yellow flowers come in February through April. The fruits are berries, ripen red in summer and have sweet and sour flavor, edible.
