The Corn cockle (Agrostemma githago) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is an annual herb that is native to Europe and western Asia. It grows in dry wastelands and wheat fields, and is 60 to 90 cm tall. The stems are slender and erect, with linear, entire leaves growing in pairs, and there are no stipules. It produces pink to pale red flowers from July to September. The genus name is Latin for "field chaplet". In Japanese, it is called "麦仙翁" (Mugi-senno).
