The "Aiguro-matsu" (Pinus x densi-thunbergii) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, and the Korean Peninsula. It is a natural hybrid found where Japanese red pine and Japanese black pine grow in close proximity. Typically, the base of the trunk is slightly bent like that of the Japanese black pine, and the top of the trunk is red like that of the Japanese red pine. It flowers from March to April, and the cones ripen in the fall of the following year. The "Kiseki-no-ippon-matsu" (Miracle Pine Tree) (Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture), which survived the Great East Japan Earthquake, is this species.
